Kaboom Town — July 3rd

This is touted as one of the top ten fireworks displays in the nation and is extremely popular. The Town of Addison brain trust decided to hole the event on the evening before Independence Day. In fact, it was once called The Fourth on the Third.

There are a few thing you should know about it:

•Fireworks are set off at the south end of Addison Airport. If you choose to view the show from one of the restaurants on Belt Line, pick one with patio seating on the south side. Duke's and BlackFinn have the best patios for this event. Reservations are not accepted and if you arrive at 6:30 for the 9:35 fuse lighting you might, just might, get a table.

Traffic immediately afterwards is best described as horrendous. Wait it out. Stay where you are until 11:30. The good news is the Addison Airport Tunnel is toll-free until the traffic clears out.

•The town offers a (somewhat) free party at Addison Circle Park. Admission and entertainment is free but you must pay for food and beverages. Picnic baskets, however, are allowed. Take cash. Credit cards will not be accepted.

•To go truely cheap try a parking lot. Sam's is sometimes fickle but will probably allow you to park there. BYOB but remember, restaurants have restrooms and parking lots do not.

•The Cavanaugh Flight Museum flyover should not be missed.

Subway — 5100 Belt Line, Neighborhood 7

Village on the Parkway next to The Flying Fish

Did you know that there's a Subway sandwich shop in Addison? Now you do. Did you know that they now offer breakfast? Now you do. They're very proud to now serve the pretentiously named Seattle's Best coffee.

Menu (their breakfast menu is currently not available online.)

Google map is here.

There is also a Subway at 3751 Belt Line near Marsh.

Hours:
7:00am - 10:00pm daily

The Outer Marker Sports Cafe — 16101 Addison Road

NW corner of Keller Springs, near the Addison Airport Tunnel entrance

Back when legendary Addison bartender Tiger Gaynier worked here it was called Long Shots Sports Grille. Tiger went on to greener pastures. This place went to seed. As of this writing the web site had not been updated. Neither had the bar. Recommendation: don't go out of your way to go there.

Hours:
5:00pm - midnight Tue
5:00pm - 2:00am Wed, Thur, Fri
6:00pm - 2:00am Sat
closed Sun, Mon

Benedict's Restaurant — 4800 Belt Line

SE corner of Inwood Road

This place has been around for decades. It offers a semi-fine dining experience with similar prices. The dress code, however, is very casual. When it is offered, try the half sandwich plus soup ($6.50). Their breakfast specialty seems to be omelettes ($9.25-$10.75) which come with country fried potatoes and your choice of English muffin or toast. One of these days I'll try the aspergrass (their spelling, not mine) omelette (their spelling, not mine). Also available are hot cakes (pancakes) and waffles. Both are $6.95 and up.

Lunch begins with French onion soup ($4.25) or an assortment of salads ($8.95 and up). Sandwich selections include an 8 ounce burger ($7.95), French dip ($9.95), club ($9.25) and chicken chipotle ($8.25). The crab melt ($10.95) begins with a slice of grilled sourbread topped with lump crabmeat salad, tomato, sliced avacado and Swiss cheese, broiled and served open face. All sandwiches come with country fried potatoes or chips.

Benedict's decor is New England reminiscent with wainscoting and Cape Cod chairs. Music by James Taylor and Smokey Robinson. Kids menu available.

Hours:
6:00am - 2:00pm Mon-Fri
6:30am - 3:00pm Sat-Sun

Dunkin' Donuts — 4900 Belt Line

At the SE corner of Landmark.

Other than donuts, the menu is limited. There are a few breakfast (and lunch) sandwiches with the filling between a sliced English muffin, croissant, bagel or two pieces of flatbread. People go here for the coffee and there is the typical argument over whether it's the best or highly overrated. I prefer Dunn Bros. If you lost the bet and now have to provide donuts for the entire office call 972-239-1700 for pricing. Seating for 18. No smoking. Menu link. Dunkin' Deli items may not be available at this location.

Hours:
5:00am - 8:00pm daily

Chuck's — 2661 Midway

At the SW corner of Trinity Mills

This review is for my friends at the Addison Service Center (hi Nicole, Michelle, Stacy and Chris) and others at the north end of Addison Airport.

Chuck's is a Richie Cunningham hangout. It's a sock hop diner in red, white and black, with "Peppermint Twist" and the Big Bopper coming from the speakers. Wafting through the air is the smell of charcoal grilled burgers. As Al Gore had yet to invent the Internet during the era of poodle skirts, Chuck's has no web site. Below is a partial menu. All burgers are huge and come with fries. To save calories and 50¢ order without.

•Old fashioned (mayo + mustard) $5.69
•With cheese +30¢
•Hickory cheddar $6.49
Chicken salads (4 varieties) $6.89
•Hot wings (8) $5.99
•Baked potato $4.49 and up
•Ice cream float $2.39

Chuck's is very family friendly. No smoking.

Hours:
11:00am - 8:30pm Mon-Wed
11:00am - 9:00pm Thur-Sat
closed Sundays

Twin Peaks — 5260 Belt Line

On the south side between Dallas Parkway and Montfort.

Cleavage anticipation. I've been waiting for this place to open. This is where the boys go when they tire of Hooters. This is where the girls go when...well, not too many go there. Like all Twin Peaks, this one looks like a hunting lodge. The stools look like they're made from rough-hewn wood. It's fake. The rocks around the fireplace look like they came from a river bed. They're fake. The boobage on many of the waitresses look like...let's not go there.

First, the menu. I asked our waitress if the Rocky Mountain Oysters were what I thought they were. "Yes they are," she smiled and said. Then I asked if there were many requests for them. She again smiled and said, "No, not really." I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. It was good. My friend just munched on some fries. We had a couple of man sized beers which Twin Peaks claims is served at 29°. I beg to differ. They tasted like they were only 33°. $2.95.

This being Addison, smoking is allowed in the large bar area. The hostess will be happy to sit you in the non-smoking corner. A patio provides fresh air when the garage doors are open. There are 7 flat screen TVs showing sports but unless a major game is on you're usually treated to music by Harvey Danger or similar. One oddity is that the bar tables are permanently ensconced into the floor.

Happy hour (2:00-7:00pm and 10:00-11:00pm) offers 99¢ girl size select draft beer. On Saturdays and Sundays kids 12 and under eat free until 4:00pm with an adult meal purchase.

Hours:
11:00am - midnight daily

Google map is here.

I wonder why it's called Twin Peaks?

Nazar Turkish Restaurant - 15107 Addison Rd

I've never been to a Turkish restaurant before, but I've had Mediterranean. I saw this place had $7 lunch special so checked it out. The place was empty at lunch, but after eating decided there was no reason for this. $7 gets you fresh bread, a soup or salad, a lunch, a drink and a dessert. It's not the best food I've ever had, but it was well worth what I paid for it. I had the Döner Kebap ( Gyro ) with lentil soup. The soup was good. The meal came with plenty of meat and tasted a lot like brisket, so I'm not sure if I had any lamb at all. The dessert was a Turkish flan and it was one of the best flan type desserts I've had.

Overall, the food was pretty healthy. If you're looking for a good amount of decent food for $7, I highly recommend this place. Some of the lunches are served with fries, but you can avoid those by choosing other lunches.

They have hookahs and do belly dancing on Friday and Saturday at 8:30 PM.

Flying Fish — 5100 Belt Line, Neighborhood 7

Village On The Parkway, toward the back, near Montfort

Catfish in Addison!

The sign above and in front of you as you enter reads:
"How it works: order from the guy (or gal) at the register then pay him, take the vibrating flashy thing and find a place to sit down. When it goes off go back to the counter and get your food. Go sit back down and eat it. Then come back and bring a friend."

MENU!

Good food. All you can eat ("till we run out") catfish Wednesdays for $9.99. Great hushpuppies (add hot sauce). No tips. Tea and lemonaide. Beer. Smoking allowed only on the patio. Cajun music. This is a popular place.

Hours:
11:00 am - 10:00 pm daily

Big Dave's Burger Emporium - 5403 Arapaho Ste 115, Dallas

The best burger in the Addison area is across the tollway at Montfort and Arapaho, NE corner. Purdy's held this crown for a while, then they were bought by someone that started adding Korean food to the menu. Shortly thereafter, they were gone.

Big Dave's says all of their burgers are 1/2 pound, but they also have a 1/3 pound burger on the menu. Why you'd want anything less than a 1/2 pound is beyond me. The burgers are consistently good. The fries leave a little to be desired, but you're going here for a burger. The chicken strips aren't bad either, and a basket with drink will only run you $5.40 with tax. Concrete floors, a couple of flat panel TVs and some networking boxes on the floor indicating they may offer wireless internet.

Right now, they're giving their customers a Frequent Diner's Card entitling you to 20% off for the rest of the year. Even without the card, I'm not sure where you can get a real 1/2 pound burger, fries and drink for $7 anymore.

Menu

Dickey's Barbecue Pit — 3711 Belt Line

About as far into the sunset as you can ride and still be in Addison.

Of the two barbecue restaurants in Addison, Dickey's is better than that other one. But it's still a chain restaurant in the high rent district and the food suffers because of it. Start with their web site and menu. Most diners get sandwiches with one or two vegetables. The pulled pork is not pulled at all; it's chopped. But it's good. The brisket can be a crapshoot. Like most serving-line BBQ places the vegetables are best forgotten. Currently the manager's special is a sandwich, fries and a 16 ounce drink for $5.99. But the fries are the waffle style. What idiot thought up that design? And the only ketchup around comes in tiny packets hidden above the condiment bar where the raw onions are chopped instead of offered in traditional rings.

For my taste Dickey's sauce is too sweet. It comes in both mild and hot versions. Get the hot. Free soft-serve ice cream is available at the end of your meal. Included in the drink price is a cute yellow souvenir take-home cup.

Allow this fifth-generation native Texan to get on his soap box and pontificate about sweet tea. Some claim that tea must be served sweet to be acceptable in Texas. That's just not true. I may have been born in these parts but I have roots in West Texas. Sweet tea is an East Texas tradition. Sugar wasn't imported into West Texas until a little over two years ago. Dickey's offers both sweet tea and real iced tea.

Seating for 72. No smoking. Average. Delivery available.

On The Border — 4855 Belt Line

On the Tex side of the Tex-Mex border, east of Addison Road.

Once upon a long, long time ago this On The Border was on the other side of Belt Line and closer to Midway and if my brain wasn't fried from too much hot sauce I'd guess it was in the building now occupied by Black Finn but I wouldn't bet a chimichanga on it. But I do remember two, large, really cool chandeliers made of empty beer bottles that hung in the bar at the old place. Those two chandeliers immigrated and now reside in the bar of the new location.

On The Border offers typical Tex-Mex fare in a fiesta-colored environment. The food is somewhat unimspired yet good enough to make you go back. La lista de comida es aquí. Pay particular attention to the Create Your Own Combo. Our party of five took advantage of the choices on our last visit. I had the chicken tortilla soup which came with a very small slice of avacado. Good! Everyone else had a house salad. One of the dressings available was jalapeño vinegarette which sounds delicious but no one would give it a try. Neither compliments nor complaints were heard about any of the food. However, a queso dip was ordered to share and share it was with abandon. It should be a must-have on your next visit.

OTB is completely smoke-free inside. Smoking is allowed on the patio which features a unique fountain. A separate to-go counter is located on the opposite corner and has reserved parking spaces. Full bar.

Stadium Cafe — 4872 Belt Line

SW corner of Landmark, near Inwood

This is a sports bar with real food. You'll find an extensive menu here. There's something for everyone. The chalk board by the front door lists the soup of the day ($3.75). Add that or any of their other regular soups to a half deli sandwich for just $6.75. If your meal comes with a choice of potato salad, give it a try. It's skin-on and very good. They also have free food weekdays 5:00-7:00 when happy hour ends. The free food is their choice and self-served from a buffet table.

Stadium Cafe is the Official Home of the "Bills Backers." When the Buffalo Bills have a scheduled game you'll find a crowd of 70-140. Saturday afternoon in the fall most of the 17 TVs will be tuned to Big 12 games. When major sporting events are not broadcast live, Foo Fighters-genre music is played.

The big draw back here is the very small non-smoking section, but it shouldn't be a problem during the weekday lunch hours and after happy hour.

The Great Outdoors — 5290 Belt Line

On the east side of Montfort and cleverly hidden behind Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Check the menu board overhead to know what you want before you get in line, then order by number. Your bread options are white or wheat. The guy with 9 ½ fingers operates the meat slicer. If you've never been there before try the Outdoorsman. Then move on down the serving line to choose the veggies you want added. Everything is prepared before your eyes and behind a glass sneeze guard. To either your aggravation or due to their efficiency you are asked to pay before your sandwich is ready. Perhaps that is so you'll notice the tip jar.

The bread is baked fresh daily and can be hit or miss. Everything else is generally spot-on. The Great Outdoors is also popular for take out.

Manny's Uptown Tex-Mex — 14905 Midway

1 ½ blocks south of Belt Line, next to J's Breakfast & Burgers.

The front door is on the side of the building.
This is casual sit down dining of some very good Tex_Mex fare. Judging from the crowds during weekday lunch hours many agree. The lunch specials, available Monday-Friday 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, are $6.95. You won't be disappointed with what is brought to your table. The refried beans, which are good, do not quite equal those at the Blue Goose. The hot sauce certainly deserves the adjective. You won't be smothered by the black-clad wait staff though they are attentive.

Many times their web site doesn't work as well as their cooks but you can try it.

Happy hour brings the crowds back weekday afternoons 4:00-7:00. Nineteen different types of bottled beer are available, including my favorite, Bohemia. No beer is on tap. Margaritas on the rocks are popular. The bar itself seats 10 where ESPN is usually tuned in on the 3 TV screens. The volume, however, is normally muted so as to not interfer with the musica Mexicana heard throughout the restaurant.

I've saved the best for last: the patio. Fortunately it faces east, an important consideration in hot Texas summers. Only there may Joe Camel light up.
No guns allowed.

Pete's Cafe — 3610 Belt Line

Just west of Marsh.

This place is so far out west in Far West Addison that it's actually in Farmers Branch. Barely. But it's an instution, very popular and should be included here. The booths (there are no tables) are clean and functional but the walls, floor and ceiling are low-rent lake cabin. The cash register is an old NCR model but they do take credit cards. KLUV is the radio station of choice. There are no TVs.

But behold! They do have a web site with menus and prices. Be sure to check out the "specials menu" which includes the Early Bird Special available during the week (Monday-Friday except holidays). Two eggs any style, bacon or sausage, hash browns or grits, and toast or bacon and gravy for just $4.25. Cheap. Smoking to the far right weekdays. No smoking on weekends, when you can expect a wait to be seated.

Closes daily at 2:00 pm.
Opens:
5:00 am Mon-Sat
6:00 am Sun

Siegel's Sign — 15003 Inwood

The iconic sign, long a landmark at the Siegel's package store at Lemmon Avenue and Inwood Road, had nowhere to go when the store was razed. Now Addison has granted an exception to its strict sign ordinance and we should be seeing it at Siegel's Addison store sometime in June.

300 Dallas — 3805 Belt Line

Third traffic light west of Midway, behind Los Lupes Mexican Restaurant.

A bowling alley in Addison? It's no joke. But this is no Drew Carey hangout. There are 36 lanes (6 semi-reserved for parties), an arcade and 6 full-size pool tables in the bar area which is, oddly enough, lit brighter than the bowling area. For more info on bowling visit the web site.

Let's talk about food. A nattily clad waiter will bring you a menu and take your drink order. Here's a sample of the offerings:
Crab cakes (2) $11
Nachos (ground beef) $10
Sliders (3) $7
•beef
•bbq pulled pork
•honey mustard chicken
Pizza $15
Steak burger $10
Beef empanadas $10
Wedge or caesar salad $8
Plus tax. Plus tip. No smoking. Full bar. ATM on site.

IHOP — 3910 Belt Line

West of Midway, past Sam's, keep going, it's under the blue roof on your left.
They're all pretty much the same and you've probably eaten at an IHOP before so there won't be a review here. This is for visitors and workers who didn't know that Addison ventures this far west. Smoking section except for Saturday and Sunday mornings. Popular for lunch too.

Topz Healthier Burger Grill — 5000 Belt Line

Addison Walk Center next to Freebirds World Burrito.

Good food, but this place could also be called Topz Expensive Burger Grill. As their web site doesn't list prices, they will be shown here. I truely enjoyed the turkey burger ($5.80, cheese extra). It will make you rethink limiting your backyard grilling to beef. Served on a whole wheat bun, it comes with the typical vegetable accoutrements plus condiments of either mustard or their secret recipe (mayo with garlic) house sauce. Also on the menu board are the 100% Angus beef (¼ lb $4.99/½ lb $6.75) and veggie ($5.85) burgers plus chicken breast ($6.10) and yellow tail tuna ($6.85) sandwiches. Salads ($6.99) incorporate any of the above patties on a bed of romaine lettuce.

Fries ($1.80) are air baked. There is no deep fryer at Topz. The most popular are those made from sweet potatoes. The regular Idaho variety is also available. My only complaint is if I'm paying a premium price for a premium burger I expect to get a premium tomato slice to go with it. Yet what is offered is generally wafer thin and red may not be the predominant color.
Seatinf for 40. No smoking. No beer.

The Londoner — 14930 Midway

On the NE corner of Midway and Beltway.

"World's finest cuisine" and "England" are words seldom found in the same sentence but The Londoner does well within its chosen confines. The requisite fish and chips consists of beer-battered Atlantic cod (flaky and tasty) and very decent fries. Chicken is a suitable substitute but costs a bit more. To accomodate American tastes, shepherd's pie is made with ground beef instead of traditional lamb. The flavor is enhanced with carrots and onions and the topping, as always, is mashed potatoes. Cheese upon request. Yes, the menu included Scotch eggs.

This is a typical English pub in most every sense. The emphasis is on drinking and merriment. The wall behind the bar is a showcase of more taps of regular beer, lager, stout and ale than you can imagine. Many of the denizens speak with a funny accent. Three dart boards and a seldom used mini pool table are off to one side. A sign as you enter advises you to "please seat yourself" with smoking to the right and non-smoking (until 10:00 pm) to the left. Smoking is allowed on the patio. Perhaps smoking is the national pasttime across the pond.

The national passion across the pond is soccer. Texas liquor laws must be followed but The Londoner will open for live satellite coverage of many matches, especially playoffs, on their flat screen TVs. Soccer schedules and menu can be found here on their web site. I wonder, just what is shown on the telly there on Super Bowl Sunday?

Taste Addison Tips

The margaritas are lime gatorade mixed with crushed ice. If you still feel the need for a margarita, you have options. When you first enter the gate, Cristina's is to your right. Their "margaritas" are $10! You do get some fancy (girly) looking plastic cup that you will probably end up throwing away at the end of the night. A better value is the "margarita" at Cantina Laredo which is back towards the building that hosts the Robert Mondavi tasting. Their "margaritas", though a couple of ounces less, were either $4 or $6. I forget because I consumed several of the value priced 16 oz. Miller Lites at $3 each. That's less than they charge at the restaurants. Don't drink too many or you'll end up switching electricity providers and come home with a bag that says "Green Mountain Energy".

Freebirds is making burritos, though they don't have the full line of choices. My wife, after a couple of glasses of wine and a Cristina's "margarita", said it was "so good".

I think it's Chamberlain's that has a $2 booth. They had some Prime Chili which was outstanding. They had small draft beers too, but wouldn't refill my empty Miller Lite bottle.

If you're there for the concert, don't try to have too much fun. The Addison Police will stop you. As soon as a girl gets on a guy's shoulders, they will be there to stop it. And if you are there for the concert, in front of stage left is less crowded than stage right.

I left a Coke Zero for you in the parking garage. Have fun!

Addison Market — 5049 Addison Circle East

On the NW corner of Spectrum.

A typical 7-11 is four times the size. A typical 7-11 has food ready-to-eat. This place offers packaged cold sandwiches and an ATM.

Pastazios Pizza — 5026 Addison Circle East

On the SE corner of Lewis Pl.

My first experience with Pastazios pizza was when it was catered at a private event in Addison. I really liked the two slices I had. It's typical New York-style pizza with thin crust and just barely enough tomato sauce. The sausage topping had a great taste but the cheese lacked the normal baked-brown look. Still, I was impressed enough to go to the restaurant for a second helping but this time chose the chicken parmigiana sub. What a disappointment. Chicken is not supposed to be tough. This was. I've had squirrel (I really have!) that was easier to chew. What this sub needed was a torpedo.

The restaurant's appearance was nice enough with 3 muted TVs tuned to CNBC and satellite music piped in. Outside there are 11 tables on the sidewalk with a view of the small park across the street. The buildings provide shade in the afternoon. What was missing from the ambiance was customers and this was during the traditional happy hour. Pastazios doesn't attract that crowd with its prices ($3.00 domestic/$3.50 premium) and a beer fridge not stocked for volume.

Here's the menu. Pizza by the slice is currently $2.99 for the regular and $3.99 for the deluxe. Prices are written on an overhead chalkboard and thus subject to change.

Again, I enjoyed the pizza and if your company is buying the employees' lunch I would not be hesitant to recommend Pastazios. They cater and deliver. 972-386-9200. But with so many restaurants in this town I just cannot see this as a dining destination.

Besa's Pizza and Pasta - 14856 Preston, Dallas

Outside of Addison, but worth the drive, especially if someone else is doing it. Highly rated pizza by the slice for cheap. 2 slices, a salad (get the house dressing) and a drink will set you back $6.48 with tax. Order your slices at the counter, they'll finish cooking them and bring them to you while you enjoy your salad.

I wouldn't say anything bad about this place. They got robbed once and I think the owner jumped over the counter and held the robber down until police arrived.

Atmosphere (**) - Typical strip-center pizza place.

Entertainment (**) - TV with news. People walking dogs in the grass because there's a dog wash around the corner.

Financial (****) - $6.48 with tax for a meal and drink. Doesn't get much better than this anymore.

Nutritional (*) - It is pizza.

Dunn Bros Coffee — 3725 Belt Line

On the north side near Marsh Lane.

I've been drinking coffee since I was 12 years old and was taught, in fact required, to drink it black, no sugar. In those days it was Folgers but I've since switched to Community brand. I may change my loyalty. Never have I ever been so impressed with a 12 oz ($1.65) cup of joe. The writing of this review began immediately. On a scale of one to five the aroma alone rates a six. There was no harsh aftertaste. It is rich, bold and just strong enough. I have truely found coffee nirvana. Of course if you require all of those tuity-fruity additives to mask the glorious wonder they will be happy to oblige. In addition to the selection of hot drinks Dunn Bros offers pastries, sandwiches and salads, soft drinks and iced beverages.

The decor is typical coffee house. The music is calming and ethereal. Live music contributes to the ambiance nightly. On this late Sunday morning there were 15-18 inside plus 6-8 sitting at the outside tables. Solo guests were reading sections of the newspaper (provided) or engrossed with a book. One couple was playing backgammon. Three were using the free ("All we ask is that you buy a drink") Wi-Fi. Conversations dominated the others' time. All could easily blend into Austin's SoCo neighborhood.

Those that still gravitate to that other, better known coffee chain do so because they have not discovered Dunn Bros Coffee. For their sake I hope they do.

Carrabba's Italian Grill — 17548 Dallas Parkway

Just south of Trinity Mills on the European side of the road. Look for the trees growing atop the piazza.

Once you accept the fact that there is no Mulberry Street in this immediate area you'll realize that Carrabba's is the best of the chains specializing in Italian fare. Ciao Olive Garden.

When Catie was 5 or 6 she discovered the wonder that is Carrabba's mussels (cozze) in white wine sauce. We tried to convince her that the calamari was really onion rings but she wasn't buying into that. I've tried to pry her away from the bowl of bivalves and get her to taste the greatness of the chicken soup but she's not buying into that either.

Chicken Marsala

The meal starts with the traditional bread and saucer of olive oil. Hint: ask for a little balsamic vinegar. It won't be added to your bill. I tend to lean toward the chicken parmesan but the chicken Marsala may be the most popular item on the menu. Meals come with a salad but they will gladly substitute spaghetti. The wine list is extensive. Except for weekday lunch, Carrabba's is very famnily friendly and there is a kid's menu. And speaking of the menu, take a gander at it. Though near Addison, this location is in North Dallas so enter zip code 75287. The menu also describes some pizza offerings though I don't recall ever seeing anyone partake.

No smoking. Full bar. To go. Styrofoam doggie bags.

Gloria's Restaurant — 5100 Belt Line, Neighborhood 8

Village on the Parkway, directly behind Bed Bath & Beyond and facing Dallas Parkway.

Gloria's has its roots in El Salvador but it knows which side of the tortilla is buttered and thus has a menu with plenty of Tex-Mex favorites. Yes, you can order fajitas, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas and nachos but why do so when you can have some true Central American food. Try the Salvadoran inspired pupuas - two corn tortillas stuffed with pork, cheese or both. It's refreshing to have black beans in lieu of refried. Plantains, those green banana cousins, are served with some meals. I've never appreciated ceviche so I can't truthfully comment on it. I can positively comment on the pollo con champiñones but then I pretty much like every chicken dish put in front of me. Read the description in the menu section.

Gloria's is popular with the Addison beautiful people and the $30,000 millionaires. Happy hour on the patio is an event and though it faces the afternoon sun some foliage-impared palms have been planted. The umbrellas bloom at the appropriate time. I've never been to Gloria's at 11:00 pm on a Saturday night but apparently that's when the live salsa music amps up y la Latina bonita population appear.

Because sometimes there's a deadline at work, you just want to sit in your hotel room and watch HBO or you're almost out of gas. Jason's Deli — 4021 Belt Line

Just past the first traffic light west of Midway.

With locations in 29 states you may be familiar with this restaurant based in Beaumont. Jason's specializes in made to order sandwiches from a large menu, consistantly good soup, a satisfying salad bar and popular baked potatoes. Vegetarians should be happy with the selection and the health conscious will find appropriate items clearly marked. The pretentious can accept the quality paper napkins.

If you're from New Orleans try the muffuletta. It's not as good as back home but it's a decent substitute. The broccoli cheese soup can cure the common cold.

The to go menu is the same. The only difference is the food comes in a sack and the soup bowl comes with a lid. Jason's delivers throughout Addison, including office buildings, for a flat $7 fee ($25 minimum). Party trays and catering are also available. Call 972-239-0074 for the latest scuttlebutt and other information.

To whet your appetite look at what will satisfy it. If there is a problem with the downloading go here and enter zip code 75001. No smoking. No guns. Yes beer. Plenty of parking. Jeff Thomisee, Manager.

Taste Addison 2009 — Addison Circle Park

Between Addison Rd. & Quorum Dr.

Friday 5/8 5:00 pm - midnight
Saturday 5/9 noon - midnight
Sunday 5/10 noon - 6:00 pm
See * below

Is there a local restaurant that you've always been curious about yet reluctant to devote an entire meal to for fear of disappointment? Taste Addison (two words only) can help. Over 50 restaurants offer smaller portions at smaller prices of only two or three items on their menu. No State Fair food will be found here. Beer, bottled water and soft drinks are also available. Bands perform on stage to help bring the crowd total to near 70,000 over the 3 day event. A children's tent keeps the little ones entertained. Carnival rides are available.

This is a cash only event. ATMs are on site.

Here is a list of this year's participating restaurants. The criterion for their invitation is that the eatery must be within the town limits.

The bands and their schedules are shown here. Bands change yearly. Expect a large crowd Saturday night. Bring a blanket for lawn seating. Folding chairs are not allowed.

For connoisseurs of the grape, there is "Discover Wine with Robert Mondavi." Arts & Crafts abound. Real restrooms are trailered in.

Entrance fee:
$5 before 5:00 pm
$10 after 5:00 pm
Children under 4 free.
Advanced discount tickets are available from Tom Thumb groceries but keep in mind that Taste Addison takes place outdoors in May and rain checks will not be given.

*Are you reading this after the event? This is the 16th year so mark your calendar for the first or second weekend in May next year.

Parking can be a problem. Handicapped parking is at the Addison Transit Center. Free parking is at the corner of Dallas Parkway and Arapaho Road.

Addison Circle Park is here.

Duke's Original Roadhouse — 4180 Belt Line

If you can find Sam's Club, you can find Duke's.

"It's where your friends are."
"Home of the $5 pitcher."

Duke's isn't so much a dining destination as it is an after work hang out. It's a bar with the town's most popular deck. It's so popular, in fact, that during colder months propane heaters are brought out. Those going inside are either going to the restroom, withdrawing Andrew Jacksons from the ATM or buying Camels ($7.50) from the machine near the waitress station. Ot to play the Golden Tee. Or to escape a sudden downpour. Duke's is where you can find Happy Hour Harry.

You can park up close at lunch, as long as it's not St. Patrick's Day or Cinco de Mayo. But after 5:00 pm the lot starts filling and the cook gets bored. The emphasis then becomes libation participation.

Left click here for the menu and possibly a beer trivia game.

A short message about parking. Generally there's ample in the rear. During times when ample is not ample enough, Sam's may or may not let you park on their lot. If not, warning signs should be prominent enough to prevent the alert from getting their cars towed. Absolutely no overnight parking is allowed.

Duke's is biker friendly. If you see George, buy him a Jack and Coke. Easy on the Coke.

Hours:
Open daily 11:00 am - 2:00 am

Antonio Ristorante — 4985 Addison Circle

On the NW arc.

Let me confess up front that I've only eaten here once. Don't let that comment deter you from giving the place a try. The food was very good. The location is a detriment. Proprietor Luciano Cola is doing himself a disservice by not having a Belt Line address. The fine Italian fare can be reflected in the prices which might be a tad steep for the casual diner, especially for lunch. But I can personally recommend the asparagus soup with parmesan cheese ($4.75). With water, tax and tip you can go back to the office bragging about where you ate and you're only six dollars lighter.

Non smokers will be happy that the dining room is off limits to lit cigarettes. The bar area is small with 3-4 tables and only 4 bar stools. Alfresco dining is seasonal.

Six of us ate there on a Saturday night and were seated immediately. The crowd was sparse and that's too bad. The cause was not the quality of the product or service. A dearth of diners should not dissuade you from making a delectable discovery. Perhaps the scarcity is due to the parking. A traditional suburban lot would ruin the ambiance of the area and street space is limited. Not to worry. If you're headed north on Quorum from Belt Line, make the circle until you can drive west toward the airport. Wave at the valet ($5) attendant as you pass and go about another 70 feet. To your right is the entrance/exit to the free parking garage. It's well lit and next to the Addison Police storefront.

Since you insist, here's the web site. Caution. The prices have not been updated.

You can follow the Fiat fiat, then order the asparagus soup. Or you can use the valet and order anything on the menu because all major credit cards are accepted.

Blue Goose Cantina — 14920 Midway

SE corner of Beltway in the yellow frame building.

The story, as I've heard it on many occasions, is that the original restaurant owners took a trip to Mexico and "saw" a bordello with the name Blue Goose. Hence the nombre. This is some of the best traditional Tex-Mex for your dinero that you'll find. Yes, I've been to Joe T. Garcia's in Fort Worth, Mi Tierra's in San Antonio and Matt's El Rancho in Austin.
The decor is as colorful as you'd expect, but gone is the mariachi music. It's been replaced by satellite. There's also a cute little wall-mounted touch screen juke box. Dos Equis is on tap plus 18 or so different brands of beer in bottles. Tequila by Jose Cuervo and the sip-and-enjoy Patrón. The frozen margaritas are very popular but in my opinion the lime taste is too strong.

The menu should satisfy all Tex-Mex tastes but the basics bring the regulars back. Try the refried beans. There's even a brunch on weekends. Huevos execelente. But eating the famous nachos should be on everyone's bucket list.

Cindi's Restaurant & NY Deli — 2001 Midway

Just north of Lindbergh on the California side of the road.

Is this a great country or what? Here's a New York style deli owned by Vietnamese-Americans with a kitchen staffed by cooks from south of the Rio Grande. Cindi's is actually in Carrollton but you can throw a kaiser roll just right and it will land in Addison. Before you go check out their menu because flashlights and reading glasses become useful ordering utensils once you get there. They obviously put to use a very effective dimmer switch.

Did your favorite bagel place shut down Paul and Jamie Buchman? Not to worry. Head here for an assortment to please. Those and other bakery items are displayed on the left side as you enter. But Cindi's is intended for the sit down crowd. Breakfast includes eggs and pancakes. Lunch, as you may well guess, is sandwiches. The variety is vast. When my NYC-born friend Smith has a jones for hot pastrami on rye this is where he goes. The egg salad is apparently dispensed with an ice cream scoop and the top slice of bread is a balancing act. Flatten on your own. It's hard to go wrong with the tuna melt. Cole slaw comes with everything, as do a pile of very decent french fries. The ketchup bottle is usually full. Your food arrives fairly quickly but follow up service can be spotty during rush hour. Pay at the register.

As you can see from the web site Cindi's has five local locations, not really enough to be considered a chain. Don't lose your lunch if you visit the North Central Expressway Cindi's and find it's near a coffins-to-go store.

Nate's Seafood & Steakhouse — 14951 Midway

Just behind the Starbucks' drive thru.

"I eat fish every day." - Nathan Peck

Nate's certainly has its share of critics but one look at the parking lot and you have to wonder how. This is fine dining in a garishly pink building. The lunch menu prices will not attract the steno pool.

Peruse the selection here. The budget conscious should order gumbo. Challenging is how I might describe masticating the alligator po'boy. The fried chicken is not fast food. It's wait and wait and wait... Yes, you can get a hamburger and fries and they won't look at you funny.

Let's talk crawfish! Never, ever, call them crawdads. Remember "M-M" as in March to May as that's the best time to eat this Louisiana delicacy, though you'll find them many times till mid-June. Order "2 pounds turbo." You'll throw most of the 2 pounds away. The turbo is the secret spice blend that's sprinkled on them which gets on your fingers as you eat with your hands and thus arouse the taste buds as you stick the meat in your mouth. A knife and fork will not be given to you and this might not be the best thing to order if you're wearing your best white dress shirt.

Walk in the front door and veer starboard and you'll enter the fine dining room. In the hundreds of times I've been to Nate's I can honestly say that I've never stepped foot inside there. Leave your comments please.
I'm a denizen of the bar area. This is the flip-flops side but the food is the same. The motif is Cajun dorm room without the beds and smoking is apparently encouraged. At night the regulars show up.

Considering its Louisiana roots there should be no surprise to find SRO on Mardi Gras Tuesday. Laissez les bons temps rouler! Beads are de rigueur and expect Nate's lovely bride Hilde to be wearing a feathery mask.

You can order a Cajun fried turkey for your Thanksgiving guests. Caution: liberal garlic seasoning is added.

Opens daily at 11:00.

Mooyah Burgers & Fries — 5225 Belt Line

NE corner of Montfort; across the street from Walgreens

"WELCOME TO MOOYAH" is the friendly greeting you'll hear upon entering. The employees are fanatical about cleanliness though they'll not wipe your face for you. The motto is: "Just burgers. Just fries. Just better." Everything is prepared fresh daily and your mooyah is customized to your liking. One of my pet peeves is the poor excuse for tomatoes used at many restaurants but at Mooyah the tomatoes are ripened to near perfection.
Check out their limited menu of well made bun fillers. Also available are just shakes. Consider this a sack lunch since that's what your food always comes in. The decor is red and white. Should you need take out for the office call 972-661-3114 to save time. Hint: Junior size it and share the fries. Just delicious.

Open daily 11:00-10:00

Donut City — 4151 Belt Line

NW corner of Midway behind the Shell station. In the cheap rent district.

Los Lupes Mexican Restaurant — 3855 Belt Line

On the Canadian side of the road. Closer to Marsh than Midway.
In the building formerly occupied by Joe's Crab Shack.

First, click here for the menu, history, location and minutiae. Scroll down for the lunch specials. If you're up early they have breakfast including lengua (tongue) tacos. No gracias. If you're off early they have happy hour. If you want to smoke you can do so in the bar. During warmer months the patio is open. There are numerous TVs and an ATM machine. The restroom is self service.

Let's discuss the LUNCH SPECIALS. By checking the menu tab (en Inglés y Español) at the left on the web site you'll find that there is a $5.95 buffet but despite its all-you-can-eat feature it's really not that popular. I spent $4.95 for the #45 and a glass of ice water. It's hard to mess up refried beans and I wasn't disappointed. It's hard to mess up the rice and I wasn't disappointed. It's hard to mess up cheese and onion enchiladas but there were no onions and the ends of the tortillas were unchewable. The cheese inside was fine. There are various choices of sauces to spread on top and I chose the chili. To disappoint someone like me whose first Spanish words were "Careful the plate is hot" and loves cheap Tex-Mex fare is almost impossible. I was disappointed. That one sauce ruined the entire meal.

I will not trash the place because of one bad experience. I've eaten at their Carrollton location several times and always left fat and happy. That location is normally very busy.

Back to the Addison restaurant. Watch the step down as they seat you. My waitress, Marisela, spoke limited but sufficient English. She probably has a green card. She also shorted me a dime when she returned with my change. There was no wait to be seated but few empty tables during the noon hour which leads me to believe that the word was out on the chili sauce. The attire of the guests was office casual though there were a few JCPenney neckties.

Suggestion: If office politics dictate that you eat at Los Lupes just don't order from the back page of the menu and you'll probably have an enjoyable experience. Otherwise there are too many Tex-Mex restaurants around to dine here.

Opens 6:00 am Mon-Fri and by 7:00 am 7 days per week.

Separate checks allowed.

Krystal — Midway at Trinity Mills

SE corner in Carrollton; just north of Addison Airport.

Some people are such fans of this slider-style burger that when this location opened (the first in this area) off duty police had to be hired to direct the traffic. Things have settled down. The company HQ is in Chattanooga, TN and all outlets are in the South. The next closest Krystal is in Fort Worth which warrants it being listed here. It's a unique enough place to take out-of-town visitors but certainly not suitable to take a sumo wrestler.

The basic burger is a White Castle wannbe with mustard and a pickle. Currently the price is 73¢ and 22¢ more for cheese. One alone won't fill. A popular selection is the "sack attack" which consists of 12 burgers plus 2 orders of fries and 2 drinks for $12.99. The menu has variety but it's fast food. There are often "for a limited times."

For some reason the napkin holder is attached to the wall near the drink machine. The plasticware is ketchup-red and there are no sporks. Music coming out of the speakers prevents this place from becoming a teen hangout.

Menu and other trivia can be found here.

Dining room hours:
6:00 am - 11:00 pm Sun-Thur
24 hours Fri-Sat
Does this mean they close at 11:00 pm Thursday and reopen one hour later? I have no idea.

The drive thru never closes. Usually.

BlackFinn - 4440 Belt Line

BlackFinn

Wednesday is the only day I go here for lunch. 6.99 for a half rack of ribs with fries and slaw. They are some of the best ribs I've had, which is surprising because this isn't a BBQ place. They fall right off of the bone and you get messy. Don't bother going here for dinner. They're too busy with the bar crowd to give you service at a table. Lunch Menu

Atmosphere (**) - Decent, modern set up.

Entertainment (***) - Lot's of TVs.

Financial (**) - Good value on Wednesdays, bad any other time.

Nutritional (**) - On par with any other chain, but you don't go here to eat healthy.
